A photo that I questioned on a Facebook page called “Paranormal pics and videos”, was sent to us for further analysis. At first glance, it appears to be a pair of white shoes walking along the path on their own, but early signs of an AI removal tool, made me question its authenticity. The informant is adamant that the photo has not been manipulated, and we are waiting for them to supply the original photos.

We have requested the original photo's be sent to us as attachments rather than embedded into the actual email as they have been.

Update: 12/03/24

We are currently awaiting the sharing of a second image; however, we have already received the initial picture from the iPhone device. A cursory examination reveals no overt indications of artificial intelligence manipulation, and the images could depict one of two scenarios: either a pair of white trainers or trainers, or a white bird (facing left) that was captured in the image and somehow replicated by the phone.

The agency will scan the internet to see if there are any known problems with the new iPhone cameras that could create difficulties because we are aware that there do seem to be a lot more photographs like these being made public and that they do appear to be originating from iPhone users. This will stay open for now.

We have closed this case as a photo analysis also confirmed that the image appeared to be manipulated; however, we do not believe it to have been done deliberately and believe that there is an issue with the camera with iPhones from version 12 and up as we have seen an increase in odd images appearing in pictures, specifically from these phones. The subject has been informed and appears satisfied with the result.
